Why Jiu Jitsu?

“Exhaust the body, Proceed the mind, Cultivate the Spirit”

Everyone who trains Jiu Jitsu will eventually ask themselves the same question…why should I train?  Like a lot of people I started training Jiu Jitsu to learn self defense.  While this is an important aspect of training it is not what keeps me returning to the mat year after year. In fact most self defense goals can be achieved by the time you reach blue belt…so why keep training? 

Some people start jiu jitsu for the competition aspects.  While I’ve competed in the past that has never been the motivating factor.  Competition may motivate you to train longer than self defense but this alone will have a limited “shelf life”.  When your competition career is over why continue to train?  I would bet most Jiu Jitsu practictioners don’t even compete at all.

For me the answer to why I train can be found in Yoga.  Yoga like Jiu Jitsu has been practiced for more than 5000 years.  Yoga is practiced by close to 11 million people in the US alone and benefits include increased strength, balance and flexibility.  Yoga and Jiu Jitsu both will increase your metabolism, improve your cardiovascular endurance and significanty improve your core strength.  The mental stimulation of jiu jitsu and Yoga training can also not be overstated. Many people say jiu jitsu is like playing human chess.  For every move there is a counter…and a counter to that counter. The practice of Jiu Jitsu is a lifetime pursuit of perfection that can never be reached.  It will cause you to look deep inside and teach you humility and commitment.

While competition jiu jitsu has evolved over the years, the fundamental art of Jiu Jistu has not changed and can be practiced well into your old age.  While the physiological and psychological benefits of Yoga can’t be disputed…I would argue that Jiu Jitsu provides the same benefits…Plus!.  The Art of Jiu Jitsu will feed your competitive drive, stimulate and challenge your mind, while giving you one hell of a workout.  Jiu Jitsu is my Yoga and allows me to… Exhaust the body, Proceed the mind, Cultivate the Spirit!   1. Yes, nice article. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu makes you stronger in mind and physically. When I am tired from psychological attacks of life, Jiu-Jitsu helps to return to tracks. It is a nice thing to balance psychological and physical life. When you are one sided, then you experience real tiredness. Also that is a cool life style.
