 Purebred Captures BJJ Team Title

wuHundreds of spectators witnessed some of the best jiu-jitsu practitioners on island take it to the mat at the Marianas Open 2009 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament yesterday at the Father Duenas Memorial School Phoenix Center.

About 120 fighters participated in the event, said event coordinator Tony Bashaw.

Team Purebred/Lloyd Irvin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy took top honors, winning the top team trophy in the kids’ and adults’ division. Purebred owner and instructor Stephen Roberto said the level of the tournament is getting higher and that he was proud of his team’s performancepurebredeteam094

“It feels good this year, especially because all of the teams that made it out and there was a great showing from all of them,” said Roberto.

bilde1Javier Mirelez took home two gold medals for team Purebred. He won gold in the blue belt middleweight division and the 161-175 pound no gi division. He choked out Josh Quenga, also from Purebred, to win gold in the blue belt middleweight division. He won by points against David Henson, of Carlson Gracie, in the no gi division.

Mirelez was able to initiate a takedown and pass Henson’s guard to secure the win.

“I was able to work my guard and try some attempts for submissions, but time ran out,” Mirelez said. “It was a good final match.”

Kyle Reyes of Guahan Top Team had the fastest submission in the no gi tournament. He pulled off a choke on Kyle Pablo of the MongMong Toto Maite Boys in 32 seconds to win the gold medal for the 131-145 pound weight division.

“I was just trying to defend a takedown,” said Reyes. “His neck was just there and I took it.”

Bashaw said that the tournament was positive and successful.

“We got to see a lot of really good action,” he said. “The level of the game is stepping up in every aspect on Guam.”

The coordinators of the event are thankful for all of the sponsors and the volunteers who helped out.

Bashaw is planning to have a Copa de Marianas Open Tournament in September and an Invitational Tournament in December.
