Rodrigo Medeiros outlines the guard basics as:

1.  Understand when a position is lost and when to change to the next one.  

2.  Knowing who has control.

3.  Being able to escape hips.                          

4.  Learning the fundamental techniques (cross choke, armlock, and basic sweeps).

Mastering 1 through 3 will make 4 a lot easier…I realized how much work I need after watching the below video.
